interesting and troubling to think about. I am a musician with, strangely enough, learning disabilities with mathematical and spacial relationships, intervals, counting rhythms, etc - and though I may have a good internalized rhythmic sense, it was not enough to get me through the professional problems of being a pro musician. So I had to develop my own system which was, ironically, based on my own math, on numbers in relation to intervals, numbers in relation to chords. This has gotten me through although, by musicians' standards, I remain an anomaly. And I do think there are strong genetic components to all of this; some just have a poor rhythmic sense and some (like me) have difficulty hearing things which have to be worked out as though on a graph. Which is (sorta) more numbers.
Thanks for writing, Allen. You bring up some important points. Unfortunately, not everyone is going to be able to professionalize their skills. Fortunately, you can still make music. You should still make music. And I hope you can find others to musick with you. There are absolutely genetic components to all of our skills and foibles. If numbers help, then they help!
